New Zealand Commercial Project Awards: Lower Hutt Central Fire Station Apartments
The Lower Hutt Central Fire Station, a landmark symbol of modernist architecture in Lower Hutt, New Zealand, has received acclaim once again. Now, under a new identity as the Lower Hutt Fire Station Apartments, this historic building has been revitalized into a stunning residential development, recently earning the prestigious Gold Award at the Commercial Project Awards 2024.
Originally constructed in 1955, the fire station was hailed as a beacon of modernity in the southern hemisphere, embodying the architectural influences of the renowned Frank Lloyd Wright. With innovative features and technology, it stood as a testament to post-war progress. Despite facing closure in 2007 and subsequent vandalism, the building was safeguarded from demolition by Heritage New Zealand in 2010. Property developer Mike Friday saw its potential, acquiring it in 2015 with a vision to transform it into luxurious apartments while preserving its heritage.
Now, after meticulous planning and execution, the Waterloo Fire Station has emerged anew. The development boasts 14 stylish apartments, ranging from cozy two-bedroom units to spacious three-bedroom penthouses. Each unit has been thoughtfully integrated into the station's original design, preserving its symmetrical cast concrete exterior and honoring its historic significance.
The project, spearheaded by Duncan Commercial Construction Limited, has been a collaborative effort involving Cook Costello and Design Network. From the commencement of resource consent and design in 2017 to the completion of construction in June 2023, the journey has been marked by dedication and attention to detail.
The Gold Award bestowed upon the Lower Hutt Fire Station Apartments at the Commercial Project Awards 2024 is a testament to the exceptional teamwork and commitment to excellence exhibited throughout the endeavor. It not only revitalizes a cherished piece of architectural history but also sets a standard for the adaptive reuse of heritage buildings.
In celebrating this achievement, we honor not just the past but also the future, as the Lower Hutt Fire Station Apartments stand as a beacon of innovation and preservation, embodying the spirit of progress and homage to our architectural heritage.
